Im August 2022 endete bei den Europameisterschaften in München eine der erfolgreichsten Turn-Karrieren in Deutschland: Mit 33 Jahren, in einem Alter also, in dem Weltklasseturnerinnen in der Regel längst im »Ruhestand« sind, absolvierte Kim Bui ihren letzten Wettkampf und errang sensationell mit der Mannschaft die Bronzemedaille.
Kim Bui nahm an drei Olympischen Spielen, an acht Welt- und zwölf Europameisterschaften teil, wurde über zwanzig Mal Deutsche Meisterin. In ihrem Buch schildert sie ihren Weg zum Turnen und zum Leistungssport ab dem zehnten Lebensjahr. Sie schreibt über Entbehrungen, Schmerzen, Medikamentenmissbrauch, Tränen und Verletzungen.
Einerseits beteuert sie, Turnen sei für sie die schönste Sportart der Welt, andererseits nimmt sie jedoch kein Blatt vor den Mund, wenn es um die Schattenseite des Leistungssports geht: Verlust von Kindheit und Jugend, oder dem seelischen Missbrauch und der Abhängigkeit von Trainern. Sie schreibt über Essstörungen, die Schwierigkeit, sich vom Leistungssport zu lösen und damit einhergehende Zukunftsängste. Turnen auf Weltniveau als Profi – abgegolten mit einem Taschengeld und gedemütigt mit obskuren Angeboten von Sponsoren.
Es ist Kim Bui ein Anliegen, Wege zu zeigen, dass Spitzensport auch möglich sein kann, ohne das Wohlergehen von Menschen zu riskieren. Außerdem ist ihr Buch ein Appell an die Gesellschaft, Menschen und deren Leistung zu respektieren und anzuerkennen, was Menschen dafür tun, eine besondere Leistung zu erbringen. Kim Bui legt Wunden offen, ohne je verletzend zu sein.
